Hope

It’s very possible that by the middle of September I will be doing research focusing on how technology can be used to help older adults stay in their homes longer. Because of this job (which should be working out unless something really odd happens), I’m not working at UL. My vacation has once again been extended. I do hope the job works out. While it will require quite a bit of driving on my part, it will be interesting and I’ll get to play with old people (puting sensors in their homes, teaching them to play computer games).

The extension on my vacation is actually quite nice. I’ve been feeling not so well recently, so this is giving me a chance to start feeling better. Now that I’ve finally been eating well again for about 5 days I’m definitely starting to get back to my normal. I even worked on the table today! I put the second coat of primer on the bottom half of the table. Tomorrow I’ll do the top and then work on choosing the final color so we can go get the paint and get this sucker finished! Yay table!

In other news, Jesse now has braces, again. They’re only on the top for now. Poor guy. The first time around his braces only moved his teeth so they were straight… This time he’s got them to help fix his jaw, so there’s substantially more pain. We’re going to be needing a lot of advil.

The Ups and the Downs

I’ll have a job by Monday. A job at UL. And maybe even another job at OHSU so that I’ll get to pick what I do. It’s exciting. But at the same time, I don’t feel excited.

Last weekend Jesse’s grandma had half of her stomach removed because it was crawling with cancer. The good news: they got the cancer out of her stomach. The bad news: the cancer got into her lymph system. And now she’s been moved to the cardiac unit. We have no idea what’s going on.

This past week I found out that my grandpa’s girlfriend Geraldine is really sick. Her abdomen is filling with fluid. They thought it was pancreatic cancer, but the tests didn’t reveal anything. Next Tuesday she goes in for exploratory surgery.

And I’m far away from everyone so all I can do is send cookies.

On Books

I’ve been reading so much recently that I’ve decided I’d like to keep a log of all the books I read. Remember in elementary school when you had to log how many pages of what books you read each week? Sort of like that… except which books I read every month. Since I can’t remember what I’ve read when for the past month or two, I’ve combined July and August on my reading list (the link is also in the menu).

I have such a huge list of books that I want to read that I still haven’t actually bought… but I’m telling myself that I can’t indulge in purchasing more books until I’ve read at least a few more of the ones I purchased recently. Then it’ll be Half and Goodwill until I read them all! Too bad I’ll be slowing down my reading significantly once I start working.

About Meeting New People

It’s hard to meet people in a new place when you don’t actually do anything that would cause you to interact with other people. This should be obvious, shouldn’t it? I thought maybe I might meet someone at the gym… so far no luck. Meeting people through my workplace will probably be the best place to start, now I just need a workplace. I have a temp job at UL starting on the 22nd of this month, so hopefully that will help. (Though I also have a job interview at OHSU in the department of Medical Informatics on Friday and a job there would certainly help too =) I thought about joining a book club, but I really am not a big fan of talking about books. And I have a huge list of my own books I still want to read.

Meeting people is complicated. But with any luck, someday in the near future I’ll have a handfull of close friends up here.
