Hello from Nashville!

Jesse and I are in Nashville for a few days. He’s here for a conference and I’m here for fun. Heather and Curt are coming up from Knoxville sometime this evening and the 3 of us will be going sightseeing tomorrow. Currently I’m trying to decide if I want to go workout a little bit (I’m thinking not – I already showered once today and I’m feeling a little tired from all the traveling yesterday), watch a movie, read my book, work on my sudoku skills, keep playing on the computer, nap, or venture out a little – it’s a rough life =)

Dealing with Money (and other homekeeping items)

Due to some confusion on my part, the Microsoft Money file that I’ve been using for years is gone. I’m a little frustrated to have to start from scratch, but part of me says “Hey, this is a great time to learn from the mistakes you made the last time you set everything up and do things really well.” My goal is to have everything set up again by November 1st. Thankfully at this point our life isn’t too complicated, so this shouldn’t be too hard.

It might be because Jesse is graduating in just over a year or that I’m just ready to really clean things up, but I’m starting to get this “We may as well do it right now, because it’ll be harder and more complicated later” feeling. I want to get this Money thing taken care of. I keep having odd thoughts about reorganizing our filing cabinet. I know they’re odd things to want to do, but I feel like if I do them before Jesse graduates and we get a whole lot more added issues in our life it’ll be a lot easier.

What I’m looking for in life

I want to:

  • spend some quality time with my husband – even if it’s just giggling about our day over dinner
  • wake up refreshed and ready to go every morning
  • spend time playing with my crafty things
  • feel challenged by the things I do (work or otherwise)
  • keep up with my reading (academic, somewhat educational, and silly chic lit of course!)
  • resurrect the art of writing letters
  • smile at the little things
  • get myself to the gym most mornings (and spend those helpful 15 minutes in the spa after my workout)
  • be better at balancing my time helping others and doing things for myself
  • try new recipes
  • keep a clean house
  • consider my actions to be those of a “good person” [by my own definition of course, not any other]
  • keeping in touch with family and friends

I’m not sure why I never found it so challenging to manage all these things before. I thought I must have been quite busy in college, but I guess since Pomona was my whole world (with the gym right across the road, meals prepared at the right time, just 1 room to clean and only seeing Jesse on weekends) some of the things that I have now were minimized.

At least I feel like I have a fairly good grasp of things that are important to me – that way whenever I start to veer off in a direction that takes me away from them I’ll notice that some of my favorite things are missing (like writing letters! I went on a year long letter writing hiatus – what the heck was wrong with me?!).

It’s Fall!

Things were starting to heat up again recently, then BAM! – last Friday it rained like it hadn’t rained in a long time. And except for a reprieve on Saturday (when we went to a cider squeeze with some friends and squeezed ourselves a gallon of apple cider) and this morning, it’s been raining ever since. Last Friday it even hailed so much for about 10 minutes that it left ice pellets on the ground for hours. It’s amazing how these things happen.

I know, I know. It sounds like we’ve got horrible weather here in Oregon. But really, it’s nice. The rain is cleaning up the air. It’s helping keep everything green. And it’s putting snow back on our mountains. It’s not like in southern California where rain means everything floods – it really isn’t a big deal here. I go about my business just like it’s any other day (though rain sure does make for some nice napping weather!) – sometimes in a raincoat, sometimes without.

The best part about the weather – the wind. Sure, it makes walking places a little difficult sometimes… but today I took the tram to get to a meeting up the hill for work and the wind made things entertaining. You all know I’m not a big fan of roller coasters, but I’ve gotten used to riding the tram (note that the tram is not meant to be “thrilling” which is why I can handle it), so some wind or rain is fun… at least until the winds get high enough and they have to shuttle people up the hill instead (5 min vs. 25 minutes – no good!).
