Happiness comes in many forms

Today I am happy because Jesse’s car was still in front of our apartment this morning. Someone tried to steal it last night. Thankfully, they couldn’t get past the shift lock. A few calls this morning (with me working from home today it wasn’t hard!) and the car is now at the shop to be repaired.

The brownies that I made (gluten free! from Trader Joes!) are also adding to my happiness!

Goals, Dreams and Wants – Less is More

On various websites and forums I read as well as in daily conversations, there’s been a lot of talk recently about goals, dreams and wants. It’s got me thinking about these things…

Goals I’m actively working toward now:

  • Running (main goal: to be able to run ~10 miles a week for 2-3 months in addition to doing other workouts at the gym… without re-injuring myself) – Currently I’m running between 4-7 miles weekly, but not doing much else at the gym
  • Keeping the house clean without spending all weekend cleaning
  • Eating healthy, mostly organic/local foods – Doing quite well with this, just need to convince myself that mocha’s are the devil and that I don’t really need brownies
  • Make time for myself - Getting better! Sometimes it’s a pedicure, sometimes it’s a soak in the tub, and sometimes frittering a whole day away reading
  • Stand up for myself – Keeping my day I work from home sacred, not letting people believe it’s OK not to deliver on their promises, …
  • Spend more time doing active things, especially outdoors – I’ve actually been running outside!

Dreams I have (goals that are more long term, that I don’t necessarily have a plan for):

  • Trip to Italy (sometime in the next 5 years) – This was supposed to occur after Jesse’s graduation next March, but with the exchange rate and looking at the realities of our finances a year from now, it’s going to need to wait a bit longer
  • Have a kid (or two… or just one) – Someday…
  • Raise said kid in a deliberate manner – Meaning that if I get it into my head to make my own baby food and cloth diaper, then that’s what I’m gonna do
  • Buy a house
  • Build/remodel a house to be what we want
  • To live simply, mainly enjoying the people and places around me – I’m not much of a ‘thing’ person at this point and I hope to become less of one as I focus more on the people and places and experiences in life
  • To have no more student loans

If I had a couple thousand dollars I had to spend on something fun/frivolous/I wouldn’t spend my own money on I would get… (Jesse and I talked about this the other day):

  • A personal shopper/style consultant to find me all new clothes that I love
  • A few friends together for a weekend getaway at a spa

I’m hoping to spend some time thinking about my goals over the next week – I know there are other things out there that matter to me that I’m not addressing. I think having goals (whether they’re reached or not) helps us focus on things that give purpose to life – which really helps when it feels like everyday is the same! It’s nice to have some way of seeing that things are changing little by little in the direction we want.

A Doggie for Your Thoughts

I grew up having a dog, Daisy. I should say it was my grandma’s dog – but when my grandma passed away and my grandpa moved into an apartment, she became my dog. When I went away to college my mom had to take care of “the dog”. She complained about it. But then Daisy had to be put down and my mom missed her.

Since then, my grandpa has moved in with my mom. I think the company has helped keep their minds off of dogs – except that they’ve been watching The Dog Whisperer. Now they talk about getting a puppy – they want to try their hand at raising a dog again. Apparently they’ve already discussed that they’ll need a treadmill for the dog since there’s no way they’ll be able to give it all the exercise it needs. And my grandpa has said he won’t pick up after it (I thought that was part of the deal when you get a dog!?).

My mom swears they won’t be getting a dog until they move to the NW to be near us, but my grandpa asked me to find out about breeders in the area (he’s fallen in love with Staffordshire Bull Terriers). I’m just waiting for the day my mom calls to tell me she came home to find a doggie waiting for her.

Thinking Good Thoughts

Morgan Freeman has always been one of my favorite actors – he just seems to do such quality work and appears to be a fairly down to earth guy. I just read that was in a car accident, so I’m thinking good thoughts his direction. Of course, this just makes me think more of him since he was driving his 1997 Nissan Maxima at the time. Let’s say that again. Morgan Freeman was driving his 9 year old run of the mill car. Way to go for not being frivolous with money (at least I assume that’s what driving a 9 year old car means)!
