Monday Weekend Reflections

Friday:

  • Pizza with lots of veggies!
  • Getting the living room cleaned up

Saturday:

  • Cider squeeze with friends – I came home with 2 gallons – yum!
  • Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day – Amazing movie, now I must read the book
  • My first run in 2 weeks

Sunday:

  • 2.5 mile run, 6 mile bike – and I lived to tell the tale… and sit in my epsom salt bath with my book
  • Lots of really great cooking
I love weekends and the wonderful, relaxing and enjoyable things they can hold. After a little bit of cool weather last week, I definitely took advantage of the clear, warm weather we had this weekend. Even though I’d love to have another day off, I’m definitely feeling refreshed and ready for the week ahead.

Food Fun

Check out the supersized cucumber we got this past week at the farm! Absolutely amazing and 100% delicious. I should know, I had it in my lunch all last week. One baggie left of it.

I’ve really been trying to enjoy and make use of all the amazing veggies we’ve been getting at the farm. I think I’m finally getting the hang of figuring out what to make based on the random veggies we get on Monday nights. Sadly, we’re getting close to the end of the season! Tomorrow night will be pickup for week 18/26. It’s sad to be on the 2nd half of the season and it makes me wonder how I’m going to feel about going back to regular store shopping over the winter.

Today I’ve been cooking up a storm. First I made ratatouille (I loosely follow the Elise’s version over at Simply Recipes). It dirtied up what had finally been a clean kitchen, but boy were the results worth it! I also made a chili relleno casserole that I can take for breakfasts – I picked up 10 anaheim chilis at the farmer’s market to go with the 1 lonely one I had from the farm. Mmmm, I can’t wait for breakfast to eat it!

Oh and, while Jesse was away in Seattle I also made myself a homemade pizza (my favorite!) with a bunch of other veggies from the farm. I know it sound crazy, but I even put lettuce on it! It’s soooo good and not even that unhealthy. Yum. Pizza. Good thing the only pizza I can eat now is homemade… that definitely reduces how often I eat it!

Back to my roots

I grew up in Lakeside/El Cajon in the San Diego area. It was sort of an interesting place to grow up – lots of lifted trucks, country music, horses and, to go with it, all sort of interesting race relations. When I went home this past week I realized that one way that I always get back to my roots when I go home is by going out dancing with my mom.

For many years my mom has been country western dancing. She loves it. The Renegade is one of the places she’s gone since I was a little girl (it was close to our house). Now it’s where I go with my mom when I visit. Do you see that picture? There’s a horse on top of the building. But the important thing is that they’e got live music Friday and Saturday nights, a little dance floor, and a bunch of regulars.

What I noticed the other day when I was there was the growing collection of bras over the bar. Can you say redneck bar? Ah the joys of East County. But it’s always a good time… I’ve got to get a little dancing in occasionally… even if it’s at a bar with bras hanging over it.

RIP David Foster Wallace

My sophomore year at Pomona, David Foster Wallace appeared on the scene. I didn’t really understand what all the hype was about, but I do know that everyone wanted to take his classes. Since I was persuing other interests, it wasn’t on my list, but I made a mental note to pick up one of his books to understand the fuss. It’s 6 years later and now he’s gone. There will be no more novels. There will be no more students excited to take his classes.

I can’t imagine what that this is like for his family or the Pomona community. I can’t imagine what he must have been going through leading up to this. The best I can do is to pick up the next copy of Infinite Jest that I see so I can finally understand what got everyone so excited in college.

Embroidery Update

First embroidery projectOver Labor day weekend I started learning how to embroider. It stikes me as a crafty persuit where you can complete parts of a project fairly quickly, plus it doesn’t take up too much room and doesn’t even have to involve creating new items. It sounded like a great fit!

I’ve been embroidering one of the flour sack towels that I use when I wash all our farm veggies. Once I’m done with the few things I’m working on it’ll go back into use… even though it has all sorts of practice areas! I figure that the veggies won’t care. It’s probably the prettiest towel they’ll ever be dried on!

I need to go pick up some carbon paper this weekend so that I can trace designs onto my fabric. The patterns I’ve been using are ok, but not quite what I’m looking for. I’ve got a few books with patterns I really like (plus some things online) and I’m getting antsy to be able to start on them. Of course, before I start I’ll need to figure out what I’m going to embroider them on!
